Sarah did not use an architect, and added on to the building in a irregular way, the home had a strangeness about it, like doors or stairs that go nowhere, windows overlooking other rooms, and stairs with odd sized risers. She hired carpenters, who worked on the house day and night until it became a seven story mansion. Sarah Winchester left New Haven and moved to California where in 1884 she purchased an unfinished farmhouse in the Santa Clara Valley. She was also told, that building such a house was supposed to bring her eternal life. Winchester, that her life would no longer in danger. As long as construction of the house continued, the medium told Mrs. Winchester was told to move west, and to pacify the spirits she was to build a great house for them. The medium said the deaths of her daughter and husband were caused by these spirits, and she implied that Sarah Winchester might be the next victim. It was in 1881, after the death of her husband William, that Sarah Winchester, consulted a Boston Medium, who told her that her family and her fortune were being haunted by spirits.The spirits of American Indians, Civil War soldiers, and others all killed by the Winchester rifles. William had left Sarah, more than $20.5 million and 50 percent ownership in the Winchester company and an income of $1,000 a day. Oliver Winchester died in 1880, than in March 1881, Sarah's husband William, died of tuberculosis. On September 30, 1862, Sarah Lockwood Pardee ,married William Wirt Winchester,who was the only son of Oliver Winchester, the owner of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.They had one daughter, Annie Winchester, who was born on June 15, 1866, William and Sarah Winchester lost their daughter, Annie only a few weeks later. The cost has been estimated at US $5.5 million, which is equivalent to over $75 million in 2012. It is claimed the property, and mansion have been haunted by a number of ghosts, ever since construction commenced in 1884.Since her death, Sarah Winchester ghost has also been seen.The house was worked on for thirty eight years, until Sarah Winchester's death,in 1922.
